Besides popular belief that video games are bad for you, which I don’t buy into, I think video games aren’t bad at all. I have been playing video games for over ten years and I don’t feel that I am any more aggressive or violent because of them. The one thing I think video games do definitely make worse is that they are addicting. I have had times when I should have been studying or doing homework but instead I was playing Counter-Strike or Madden with my friends. Counter-Strike is a first person shooter; the screen is looking through the shooters eyes, where you have to defeat the other team. Playing video games instead of doing homework immediately relates to bad grades the professionals and I believe. There is a direct relationship between GPA and SAT scores and video game usage; this was proven in “A Study in Time Management” by Vivek Anand. The more video games that were played the lower the GPA or SAT scores were. But even if video games weren’t invented ever I would still find others things to do besides play video games, like watch television or listen to music. So you can’t really just blame it on video games.
Okay but who has even proven that video games induce violence and aggression? First off when I was reading my criminal just book I noticed a story of two kids that were playing Grand Theft Auto and went out and started shooting at traffic killing two people. In an internet exercise called Violent Video Games, Devin Moore killed two police officers saying “life is a videogame. Everybody has to die some time.” So in these two extreme chases video games have had a negative effect on these three men. But not every kid that plays Grand Theft Auto or some other violent video game go out and shoot people of course. I think the effects are perceived to be violent because the acts of the few over take no acts of the majority. There are also some bogus short term test that I don’t really believe.
What men and young boys do when they are addicted to video games I think is even more unbelievable. Robustyoungsoul said in a blog post named “Suicide by Warcraft” in China; a thirteen year old boy jumped from a window imitated a scene from the game. This is crazy, why? Just why? That’s all I have to ask. An even crazier story was of a man playing Warcraft for over fifty hours straight hours and died from exhaustion and dehydration. This is crazy! I did not believe this story when I read it. He wanted to play so badly that he couldn’t get off to drink or sleep. It’s really messed up but this is kind of funny. It’s like worse than a drug, with drugs you still sleep and drink, even though they break down your body.
So I guess my argument is that the extreme cases of video games really base the myth that video games induce violence, aggression, and addiction, even though video games take away from my grades. I don’t believe that video games made me more aggressive or violent and I’ve been playing for over ten years. I just think video games are just entertainment; it’s all about your personality. If you have and addicted personality you’ll become addicted. If you’re violent or aggressive they will probably make you more of that.
