Besides popular belief that video games are bad for you, which I don’t buy into, I think video games aren’t bad at all. I have been playing video games for over ten years and I don’t feel that I am any more aggressive or violent because of them. The one thing I think video games do definitely make worse is that they are addicting. I have had times when I should have been studying or doing homework but instead I was playing Counter-Strike or Madden with my friends. Counter-Strike is a first person shooter; the screen is looking through the shooters eyes, where you have to defeat the other team. Playing video games instead of doing homework immediately relates to bad grades the professionals and I believe. There is a direct relationship between GPA and SAT scores and video game usage; this was proven in “A Study in Time Management” by Vivek Anand. The more video games that were played the lower the GPA or SAT scores were. But even if video games weren’t invented ever I would still find others things to do besides play video games, like watch television or listen to music. So you can’t really just blame it on video games.

Okay but who has even proven that video games induce violence and aggression?  First off when I was reading my criminal just book I noticed a story of two kids that were playing Grand Theft Auto and went out and started shooting at traffic killing two people. In an internet exercise called Violent Video Games, Devin Moore killed two police officers saying “life is a videogame. Everybody has to die some time.” So in these two extreme chases video games have had a negative effect on these three men. But not every kid that plays Grand Theft Auto or some other violent video game go out and shoot people of course. I think the effects are perceived to be violent because the acts of the few over take no acts of the majority. There are also some bogus short term test that I don’t really believe.

What men and young boys do when they are addicted to video games I think is even more unbelievable. Robustyoungsoul said in a blog post named “Suicide by Warcraft” in China; a thirteen year old boy jumped from a window imitated a scene from the game. This is crazy, why? Just why? That’s all I have to ask. An even crazier story was of a man playing Warcraft for over fifty hours straight hours and died from exhaustion and dehydration. This is crazy! I did not believe this story when I read it. He wanted to play so badly that he couldn’t get off to drink or sleep. It’s really messed up but this is kind of funny. It’s like worse than a drug, with drugs you still sleep and drink, even though they break down your body.

So I guess my argument is that the extreme cases of video games really base the myth that video games induce violence, aggression, and addiction, even though video games take away from my grades. I don’t believe that video games made me more aggressive or violent and I’ve been playing for over ten years. I just think video games are just entertainment; it’s all about your personality. If you have and addicted personality you’ll become addicted. If you’re violent or aggressive they will probably make you more of that.

Skeletal Draft/Distillation of argument

  • The summary of my issue is that I’ve been studying this sub-culture, video games, for over 3 weeks and all my research has pointed towards the idea that video games are bad: video games induce violence and aggression. This doesn’t seem right to me. I’ve been playing video games for over ten years and I don’t feel aggressive or violent.
  • My thesis, in not a thesis statement, is that video games are not as bad as there perceived, even the extremely violent ones, they are still video games. Real life is real life to me and video games are video games.
  • Like I said mostly all of the research I did pointed towards video games inducing violence and aggression.
  • The only real source I have found that isn’t aimed towards the negative effects of video games is “Everything Bad Is Good For You” by Steven Johnson. He says, in fact, that video games are actually better than books to learn from. Books are just information, and video games you have to work through to win. They also help with hand eye coordination.
  • Video games have three negative points to them: they are “proven” to promote violence and aggression, they take time away from schoolwork, they can be addicting. I don’t think that video games make children more violent or aggressive, they are apart of childhood now a days. I’ve been playing video games for over ten years and don’t feel aggressive or violent. I definitely believe that they do take time away from studies though. Even in my own life I would play video games sometimes instead of doing homework. I also believe that they have some form of addiction; I experienced that so what also.
  • I’m thinking about a couple of good pictures, I could show a picture of me playing counter strike late at night interfering with my schoolwork, which is proven. I could put a picture of my friend playing guitar hero to show hand eye coordination. A picture of my friend playing Super Mario showing that he has to work through the game to win. I could take a picture of my messy pile of books under my bed all dusty to show again that video games take away from study.

My topic is video games. All of my research has led towards the idea that video games lead towards violence and aggression. I don’t believe this. I have been playing video games for over ten years and I don’t feel aggressive or violent. I believe that the way you are raised makes you violent or not. So I want to try and find some pictures that show that video games do not lead to violence. I don’t really know how I am going to do this but I’ll try.

I DONT LIKE THIS, I DONT WANT TO TELL THE WHOLE INTERNET WHAT I AM DOING RIGHT NOW, WHICH IS SITTING IN CLASS, WOOO!—I said this on my very first blogpost. i said that i dont like blogging. now i do like it. not enough to go and join a different blog site or blog when i dont have to, but its nice to have everyones work on website where we can see it and comment.

In my second blogpost which was called “Internet of the world” i said “I thought it was amazing, the fact of having internet throughout the whole world.” i still think that it would be an amazing thing. wherever you go with your laptob by 2020 you would be able to have extremely fast wireless internet! i back that up in my next blogpost “I HOPE THAT THERE IS INTERNET EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD, OR AT LEAST THE PLACES I’M GOING TO GO.” that would be wonderful.

remind me to look over everything “he said he was smuggling the trucks that he was searching all along.”

Funny Pictures and movies my favorite part of my blog

first off how do they still know everything he is still doing with the monitor off.  he says he lives inside him. he doesnt really live inside him, he just knows everything he knows. even if he isnt listening he still knows. and we dont even know who these guys are right now in the story. what the heck is psychoanalysis?—-this is what i said in the first pick and respond from enders game i liked doing this.

“The death of Iris, like the song, was really f-ed up. Like this was the ultimate sicko fetish weirdo murder death scum ever. This guy raped the girl Iris and mad her see what he was seeing and feel what he was feeling as he raped her. That’s horrible,”—-i’m made i had to read this again, makes me sick.

today in class we played the internet game hapland. I was the first person to start cheating in this game because i couldnt take not beating it anymore. i think its pretty much impossible to beat the game without a cheat. one little wrong move and you dont beat it. theres about 25 things to click before you cant win. so after you’ve clicked 20 of them and the 21st click is wrong then you lose and have to start over. and sometimes you have to activate things simultaniously. steven johnson talks about this in his book and how games like these test your brain. these games can get addicting sometimes though. which is a negative aspects if them.

“She rolls over, abandoning this pointless parody of sleep. Gropes for her clothes. A small boy’s black Fruit Of The Loom T-shirt, Thoroughly shruken, a thin gray V-necked pullover purchased by the half-dozen from a supplier to New England prep schools, and a new and oversized pair of black 501’s, every trademark carefully removed. Even the buttons on these have been ground flat, featureless, by a puzzled Korean lock-smith, in the Villiage, a week ago”

I really liek this passage it shows how truely unique Cayce is.

-abandoning this pointless parody of sleep–This shows how bad her sleeping conditions were and how tired she was so she didnt really care.

-a boy’s black fruit of the loom shirt–why did she wear boys clothes when it was just a plain black shirt

-a new and oversized pair of black 501’s–she has a very wierd style, she bought her pants big, reminds me of leo fergison

-every trademark carefully removed-she removed every logo when her job was to judge logo’s. maybe that is why she did it so she could look at logo’s just a little less. enhances her wierd style.

-Even the buttons on these have been ground flat–this seemed really a little overboard to me, but i guess she really hated those logo’s. i thought she could of just covered them up instead of paying money to have them grounded down.

-featureless– her clothes were featureless, she wore solid colors and nothing flashy. and especially no logos.

-puzzled Korean lock-smith–he was probabily wondering the same thing i was, why was she paying him to ground down the logos when she could have covered them up?

my favorite theme was how she removed all the logos, her clothes were featureless, and her jet lag made her really tired. her clothes showed how she refused to conform to society i think. she didnt wear any stylish clothes even, featureless, no bright colors. she looks like a boy. and also how her soul didnt catch up to her yet. damiens place was not that nice i got from this. the author expects us to think deep about cayce, she’s unique.

In my life convergence culture has occur by one item taken control of many items. This goes along with the black box theory. It was my new cell phone I got. Not new now, but six months ago it was new. It was my lg vx8300, a vcast cell phone. It’s the one with the speakers on either side and can play as much music as the gigabyte card you bought. I purchased a one gigabyte flashcard alone with the music essentials, all from eBay of course. Buying them from eBay saved me at least twenty dollars. So now I had one item, my cell phone that is with me more then anything, that can call, text, take movies and pictures, go on the internet, and play up to 250 songs. No need for my ipod anymore which replaced my cd player, which seems like ancient to me. This one item as long as I had the headphones for was all I need to listen to music. But the one flaw was that you needed headphones that fit into headset jacks. This is one way that the improving technology has made my life a little easier. Instant gratification.

Out of all the sideshows I saw today, all which were very good; I noticed a lot of random pictures. I liked these random pictures a lot because they made me think. Liz had one picture of a bloody television. This showed how bad television can be. Most of the people’s slideshows had basically the same thing themes. They were mostly about fighting and the future and how digital things could be bad. these were like mine i had effect of video games on children, mind control, and someone or group talking over. i really liked this exercise because it was a good way for us to use digital things, taking our own pictures and getting pictures from the iinternet to explain a thyme. it was more intresting to me then just platenly typing and saying what my theme was.
